Character Personality: A lot of really positive things can be said about Aaron. He's doggedly devoted to a cause once he's committed, he's compassionate beyond anything that resembles self-preservation, he's ardently devoted to and intimately believes in the passion of humanity as a whole, all the while feeling somewhat ostracized his entire life. More than anything, he's a deep believer in and promoter of the human condition, believing that just as humanity is capable of great selfishness and horror, they are capable of compassion and love. His own well-being never factors in to his decisions, whether its to rush to the defense of his home or to join someone in what is most likely a fool's errand, protecting others rather than himself is his first priority.

Aaron's earnest nature and altruism have followed him through the onset of the apocalypse, leading him into the role as recruiter for the Alexandria Safe-Zone where he, along with his boyfriend Eric, would spend weeks away from the safety of Alexandria's walls in search of others to bring back and join their community, truly believing that people together were far stronger and capable of far more than people on their own. He feels most fulfilled when aiding others, and strives to find the good in everyone, even identifying how his mother had meant well through her attempts to make him more manly, and knowing the others in the Safe-Zone didn't outright hate him or Eric, even though some of the things they said were "hilariously offensive".

While understanding the world has essentially come to an end, Aaron remains optimistic and somewhat idealistic, maintaining a "glass if half full" mentality, that even when things go badly, they will get better, even if that means working that much harder to make certain that comes to pass. He has a good-natured way of speaking to anyone he meets, his friends included, and a warmth of presence that tends to put people at ease, which is exactly his intention. Before doing hands-on charity work in African countries constantly at odds with different factions, Aaron worked as a politician, and his casual sense of humor and affable nature helped endear many people to him.

While typically a pacifist who would rather avoid open conflict (even if someone punches him in the face in the middle of trying to plead his case), when those he loves are in danger or threatened, he doesn't hesitate to spring to action, even at the risk of great personal harm or death. His boyfriend, Eric, is the closest relationship he's ever had, originally bonding over a mutual ostracism due to homophobia and the bigotry they both faced due to being openly gay, a sad state of affairs that has followed both of them into the apocalypse. As such, even though they're surrounded in Alexandria by several people they both saved from being forced to survive and scavenge for food and water outside Alexandria's walls, Aaron tends to keep himself a part from the others, avoiding their parties and other gatherings and only attending when necessary.

Identifying a kindred outcast in Daryl, and worried about Eric continuing to risk his life beyond Alexandria's walls on his account, Aaron befriended Daryl, who's dedication to Rick's group Aaron found inspiring enough to decide he should bring all of them to Alexandria in the first place. He sees in Daryl someone who reminds him a bit of himself: an outsider who means well, is capable, but ostracized slightly, even if unconsciously, by his peers, but who cares deeply for their well-being at the risk of his own. They proved to work well together, falling into a fairly reliable routine quickly, and Daryl's steadfast determination and unwillingness to give up even outshone Aaron's, a fact he refuses to allow to happen again.

His selfless nature is a double-edged sword at times, though, causing him to feel responsible for situations somewhat beyond his control and to hold himself personally accountable for occurrences for which he was only very loosely responsible. When he and Daryl found a lone camper but lost his trail, it was Aaron's decision to stop tracking him, and also to infiltrate the cannery they found on the way back, which ended up being a trap. While they escaped together at Aaron's insistence, sighting it was his decision that landed them in the trap to begin with, he lost his pack containing all the pictures of Alexandria he used to show potential newcomers what they could expect, giving the Wolves the clues they needed to find it, and the information they needed to scale the walls, leading to several Alexandrian deaths. He took the transgression hard, not only because it drove home how tenuous their little piece of civilization was, but also how crucial his role in keeping it safe was.

In essence, though, Aaron is an earnest, honest, eager, and easy-going man who is quick to offer a smile, even when someone points a gun in his face or knocks him out and ties him up. He's warm, inviting, welcoming, and fully believes those around him can accomplish whatever is set before them if they attempt it together.
